Anybody Here Using Lycos E-Mail { Tripod } ?

lycosUpdates :  Please see James Comment as follows clariifying thigs about the news :

Kuya Dexter,

I just want to make a few corrections regarding the shutdown of Lycos Mail since I myself is still a Lycos Mail user, and it is still one of my main mails since most of my accounts which are scattered around the web are still under my Lycos Mail…

I panicked when I read this, and to my surprise not a single announcement email was sent to me… After a few searches, it was told that only the European Lycos was affected with this, hence other Lycos users should not worry.

I have blogged regarding this just now here if its ok >> http://www.ljdiaz.com/2009/01/30/lycos-mail-users-shutting-down/

Although this is not so popular Free e-mail platform for Filipinos, There are still possibility that some of you use Lycos E-mail. Lycos Free E-mail will shutdown soon. So You better do some back up of your email system and make sure that you have all the data in the safe place. That is the problem if you have data in the freebie, Anytime your data might gone if the company giving it to you fail.

What if it happens to Free Blog Hosting provider ? It will create problems to bloggers for sure. But I just hope it will not happen soon.

Below is a copy of an email forwarded to Blogstorm by a Lycos email user:

Dear User,

We regret to inform you that our parent company has decided to discontinue all unprofitable activities.

One of the activities that will be discontinued is our E-mail business division. For this reason, we are hereby terminating your account as of 15 February 2009. Currently, we are still working on finding a solution to provide you the service through another provider. If we should succeed to do so, we will inform you within the next 4 weeks. But as this is currently doubtful, we would like to ask you to assume the end of the service.

Prior to this date, you may continue to log in to your e-mail account and receive and send mail as usual. After this date, however, we will close your account and delete all content and access authorizations stored with Lycos in relation to your e-mail account, in accordance with legal requirements.

You will then no longer be able to receive or send e-mail under your e-mail address. The contents of your mailbox will also no longer be accessible. For this reason, we ask that you back up all important data from your Lycos e-mail account in the next few days and switch to another e-mail provider.

Should you still be entitled to services for any additional paid options, we will of course reimburse the balance to the bank account you provided.

We regret this measure and would like to thank you for the trust you have placed in us.

Kind regards,

Your LYCOS Mail Team

So what if Hotmail, Yahoo or g-mail make the same thing ? That is only if… Are you willing to tell them not to continue and we just have to pay for the service ?

        @Dexter Panganiban,

        Yup, I am taking your advise seriously, actually I had already did some backup on the important mails that I have on my Lycos account after I read this post, and ever since I had my own domain and own email, my Lycos mail only served as a supplementary email such as when I forget passwords that had been signed up on under my Lycos mail.

        This is a great heads up for other Lycos mail users that haven’t heard the story yet.

        Thanks and more power!

        @Jamez,

        Good to know that you back up all your files.. And I think from now on you can change your other accounts that uses lycos to other providers such as gmail or yahoo..

        More power to your blog also 🙂

    I think this incident is far from happening to Yahoo! Mail and Gmail. Anyway, if that would occur, I’d rather use my e-mail account provided by my hosting provider.

      @Jam,

      I dont know about Yahoo Mail, but as far as I know Gmail will be their for a several years more. This past years has been great for google, they have constantly been improving their services and acquiring several companies to widen their market share in the tech industry. That is why, I dont see google’s gmail beeing revamped, even more so being removed in the years to come

        @Huan22,

        I also believed in that. But what if it is only Google giving the free service. Will they not think to earn more from that system. As of now we do not know.

        Want we can do from now is to make use of their system while it is free 🙂
