Last Tuesday, Samsung released the lightweight sibling of the S5—a powerhouse of a gadget that still retains many of the larger version’s key features, such as the fingerprint scanner, the Ultra Power Saving mode, connectivity with Samsung wearable devices, and a heart-rate monitor. The Samsung S5 was released only three months ago, but with this sleek, small version of it, Samsung is still “trying to keep the features that reflect that Galaxy S5 brand,” said Wayne Lam, a senior telecom electronics analyst at IHS—all while expanding its reach to different consumers with different budgets.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini SmartPhone Specs

With a Quad Core 1.4-GHz processor, 1.5 GB RAM, Android 4.4 (KitKat) as the phone OS, a 4.5-inch HD 720 x 1280 Super AMOLED display, and 8 megapixel rear-facing and 2.1 megapixel front-facing cameras, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini SmartPhone is a great option for any smartphone shopper—because even if these specs are slightly lower than the original S5, Samsung’s S5 Mini preserves the core features of the new model and makes them affordable to a wider group. Lam pointed out, “They’re leveraging the Galaxy S5 Mini Smartphone so consumers know about it, with its water resistance, heart-rate monitor and great AMOLED display, but they’re trying to cost-optimize other features.”

Samsung’s Mini versions of its Galaxy S3 and S4 smartphones have enjoyed a strong market share and popularity with consumers worldwide over the past few years, and with good reason: the smaller sizes of these phones, as well as their lower price tags, mean that it is more accessible to emerging markets in Asia. It has also been successful in Europe, where lower to mid-level devices are chosen over larger, less affordable options which the consumer has to buy at full price, unlike in the United States, where there are carrier subsidies for cellphones. As Lam said, “”They’re being very market-specific with the designs, as opposed to someone like Apple, where all they do is create one premium device and sell it into different markets.”

This latest Galaxy Mini smartphone is only one of two S5 variants to be offered this year. While the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini SmartPhone will be available in Russia starting in early July (and will be released worldwide in succeeding months), the Galaxy S5 LTE-A is a higher-end smartphone which is more expensive but has more premium features, and is intended to target Samsung’s home market of Korea.
