Ever dreamed of stepping into the world of a game you are playing? Ever wondered how it feels to trade blows or cross swords with your enemies? Well, you can certainly do it now with Oculus Rift.
What is Oculus Rift?
Oculus Rift, is one of the hottest inventions of today, and has even been hailed by Time as one of the greatest inventions of the generation. It is a virtual reality head-mounted display and is being developed by Oculus VR.
Oculus VR is a virtual reality company founded by Brendan Iribe and Palmer Luckey.
Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus Rift is a major collector of head-mounted displays. He also has the largest collector of such gadgets in the world. He is also a pioneer moderator in Meant to be Seen (MTBS) 3D forums.
On the other hand, John Carmack, a world-renowned game developer has been researching about head-mounted displays and accidentally stumbled upon Luckey’s prototype unit. Carmack loved the pioneer Oculus Rift, and the two started development.
News over the latest gadget started making waves and just before 2012, Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) announced that Doom 3 will now be updated to Doom 3 BFG Edition, an update to make the game compatible to head-mounted displays.
Bought By Facebook
If you think about it, the Oculus Rift was meant for hardcore gamers that’s why when it was bought by Facebook for $1.6 billion (plus $400 million in cash and $300 million for Oculus’ financial targets), a lot of people were shocked. Majority of the opinions says that it should have been bought by Sony or Nintedo, two of the largest gaming corporations in the world.
However, Oculus has other plans. Instead of limiting their gadget to gaming they want to link it to Facebook, thus creating one of the larget MMO (massively multi-user online community) with FB’s 1.2 billion monthly users.
What do you think?
We’re 100% sure that you’re super stoked about the Oculus Rift hitting the shelves, but being partly owned by Facebook, is Oculus VR walking the right path? What do you think?
