Learning Lesson from Blogging the Hard Way

What really happen the day when my site goes down?

First I am studying on how I can make back up for my site for upgrading to WordPress 2.3.2 and suddenly when I try Google I found the site http://www.ilfilosofo.com/blog/wp-db-backup/ which gave a back up plugin for my site. I was able to install and activate without any problem. I tried to push the button that says back up and everything goes Well.

I turned off the WordPress and proceed immediately to Cpanel. I Went to the ” back up icon” and press the ” full back up “. It also went fine but suddenly after I received an email to check what going on at my site I suddenly see a database error.

Wow. The rest is history. It is good that my hosting provider is there to help. We first analyze the problem and We decided that he will give me a new account and install my back up.

But upon checking my back up. It does not work. The database back up that was provided to me by the above mentioned plug-in did not work.

I tried to upload it on my previous server but it does not work. I tried to download my backup before thru FTP and it does not work. The FTP was also blocked.

I really don’t know if it is my error or my site has been hacked. Is it just a coincident?

A lot of research was made . And I can say that this case made me learn a lot from Cpanel and WordPress. That is what I am proud to say. I learn the following but I need to learn it in the hard way.

  • How to alter Wp_Config
  • How WordPress Database Work and how to create username for database
  • How to properly Install a WordPress Upgrade
  • How to use the FTP
  • How to move blog from One Server to another
  • How important to back up your WordPress data
  • That There are two types of Back Up ( Site and Data )
  • How to permalink should be structured
  • I learn to relax 🙂

I really do believe that everything happen for a purpose. 🙂 Now you will know what are my future post. Thanks God that I have my WordPress data until October 10,2007. So I was able to retrieve my post and comments. Unfortunately the only back up that I have for post is from the weblog from Windows live Writer and therefore did not include the comments. So why don’t you Subscribe to me via email so you will not be left behind with new tips that I learn. and don’t forget to verify your email so that you can receive it.

    @ Eam,

Are you telling .. You are using the back up that is shown in the cpanel.. The full back up option..?

Actually i did it but my mistake is not to download the files immidiately.

After what happen I and my hosting provide tried to get the back up in the server but it cannot be accessed thru F T P.

The F T P port has been blocked

It was supposed to work.. But really i don’t know why the sql data that has been provided cannot be open.

I tried to open the documents via excel and it works but not all the back up comments is there.

I am still looking for ways how I can insert it back to my blog.

wow! glad to hear you worked it out in the end. I’ll really , really be mad at myself if I lose such data and won’t be able to recover them. 🙂

What Allen said is true with back up. You could only recover them up to the point of your last back up so what i do is back up every week! For more important moves, like I added a plugin or something, I back it up before doing anything so as to make a ‘restore point’ if something goes wrong. 🙂

I have yet to check the plug in mentioned. Right now, I’m using my hosting’s back up.

Ah considering that the sql file is not corrupted, basically this is the case:
You can only import an SQL backup if your database is empty so any entries or updates that have not been included in the backup will need to be wiped (in general, the whole database needs to be dropped) so that the backup can be restored.

Now it’s a matter of choosing which posts to keep, the present one which you can restore manually or the old ones from the back up.

It is an SQL File but I believed the file that the plugin provided has an error. I tried to appload via PHPmyadmin>> Import >> and it send an error report.

Hi Dexter, I’m also using that plug-in you mentioned and it works. Although if you will load the sql file directly, it will fail.

In fact, I’ve written two blog posts about that plugin a few months ago.

    http://silkenhut.com/back-up-wordpress-using-a-plug-in/
    http://silkenhut.com/restoring-your-back-up-from-wordpress-back-up-plug-in/

Btw, just a little bit of warning, if you decide to try to restore from the backup you created, it will drop all database tables (delete all) and recreate the tables from scratch.

So for example, if your file was dated 1 week ago, restoring it will restore it as it was 1 week minus the new posts you wrote. 🙂

    I hope this helps.

    Allen
